I received some fantastic news in the mail today from the ISIA (High Institute for Applied Arts), in the Renaissance city of Urbino in Italy:

Dear Gaston,

we are happy to inform you that the ISIA Urbino Type Design Week 2011 selection committee has positively evaluated your application. Therefore we would like to invite you to take part to the programme from the 25th to the 29th of July.

To which I’m grateful that I am able to reply Volentieri! I’m really looking forward to put into practice my design skills as well as my Italian skills. Type design is something that I’ve always wanted to learn more of, especially after directing the work that resulted in the custom typeface for the San Diego Zoo identity last year.

The workshop will consist of one week where 26 of us will be guided in the development of an individual type design/lettering project. An interesting program of lectures will provide the participants with background information addressing discourses and techniques of type design and the design of letters as a critical design process. The workshop will be taught by Bruno Maag and others from Dalton Maag, a renowned type foundry with an impressive client portfolio and typeface library that among other things include the recently designed Virgin Galactic typeface.

The trip through il Bel Paese won’t be confined to Urbino only: I intend to visit also Florence, Bologna, Venice and Verona. And on my way back I’ll even get to say hi to my good friend Ken Frederick in Munich.

I haven’t set foot in any of these places before, so any suggestions you may have, feel free to let me know. I’m particularly excited about attending the Venice Biennale towards the end of my trip.

Watch this space for future posts where I’ll share interesting things I see along the way.
